A beautiful albeit tiny home in the busy Big Apple. A dream come true for many, a nightmare for some, especially when there is no room for a dining table, much less an office desk. An exploration of the home was a revelation. The price we all pay for our dreams. The couple, used to the lavish villa in a rural countryside on the outskirts of Amritsar, had readily adjusted themselves in this tiny piece of land in order to give wings to their dreams. Money wasn’t their problem, access to some specific resources was of prime importance to them, hence the match-box sized living.

What the apartment lacked in size, it amply made up for in views. It would be a criminal waste to not utilize the window ledge. We fashioned a desk by extending the window ledge using material from a big-box store. A comfortable chair was placed before it. The fairy light was a gift from my personal collection. It was initially purchased for the gnomes in my garden, but I realized they’d treasure it more, an ode to nature within the home.

This little corner has since become their personal haven, and both partners like to use it whenever they’re home alone, either to read, or work, or simply stare out the window with a cup of chai or coffee in their hands, enjoying the view outside, especially on a cold winter evening, letting their imagination soar, giving new wings to old dreams, adding fuel to their hearts’ desire.

The space is an important part of their home, functioning not just as an office, a place to work, but also the spot from where they can achieve the heights for which they left the comfort of their homeland, the secure warmth of the love of family. In this corner, they have the freedom to fly, and this very spot is where they will come to roost, to pause and reflect, and also to simply breathe and live in the moment. Each aspect is a function of their wholeness. The office-window, as they now call it, is their grounding force, the one that will remind them of the price that dreams require, the burning of the midnight oil, and the relentless slogging that is life, through its ups and downs, and the golden moments to come will be theirs to nurture and cherish.
